StepArc

Bilateral ESP32 insole system measuring plantar pressure distribution in real time. Senior capstone, and a finalist for the IEEE EMBS Boston Chapter 2026 Senior Capstone Award.

WHAT I BUILT
  • Designed PCB V2 in KiCad: 8 pressure sensors, two MCP6004 op-amps and a XIAO ESP32-S3 on a 45 by 30 mm board, fabricated through JLCPCB.
  • Wrote firmware with ESP-NOW bilateral communication, CRC-16 packet validation, a hardware watchdog, OTA updates and CSV export served over a captive portal.
  • Characterized the sensors on an Instron load frame, fitting power-law response curves at R² of 0.998 and 0.992 for the A401 and A301.
  • Applied ISO 14971 risk management and incorporated input from two licensed physical therapists.
  • Documented the design and results in a 41-page engineering report.
